Novel Food

Lisa at Champaign Taste and Simone at Briciole are once again hosting their Novel Event. This is a culinary/literary event that has inspired us over the past couple of years. Last December I posted the Kentucky Bourbon Pecan Pie Dottie Niven shared in 'A Redbird Christmas'. In September of 2007, I posted another of Fannie Flagg's great novels... 'Fried Green Tomatoes at the WhistleStop Cafe'. I just had to post Fannie's recipe for Fried Green Tomatoes.

This year my novel is another of Fannie Flagg's great southern stories. In 'Can't wait to get to Heaven' she manages once again to weave a story like a southern patchwork quilt. This recipe comes from Neighbor Dorothy, who hosts the local radio show~

"And now, from that little white house just around the corner from where ever you are, here she is, the lady with the smile in her voice, your neighbor and mine...Neighbor Dorothy."
Neighbor Dorothy's Heavenly Caramel Cake
1 3/4 cups cake flour sifted
resift with 1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1/2 tsp salt
1 3/4 tsp double-acting baking powder
1tsp vanilla
Pre heat oven to 350°
Beat for 3 minutes. Bake in a greased pan for 1/2 hour.
Caramel Frosting
2 Tbs cake flour
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sifted powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup shortening
1/4 tsp salt
Mix flour and milk. Cook to a thick paste over slow flame. Cool. Cream sugars and vanilla with butter and shortening. Beat until light and fluffy. Blend in slt. Mix in cooled paste. Beat until fluffy. Blend. Should look like whipped cream.
Once again Fannie Flagg has let her Southern roots show through~ and these are not the roots that could be fixed at 'Tot's Tell It Like It Is' Beauty Shop!

We love you Fannie darling!

For anyone else who might like to join in the rules are simple. Post a recipe that is inspired by a novel that you have read. The deadline is April the 4th... You still have time to send it in!
Y'all enjoy!
Sandi

I loved Neighbor Dorothy; I think she is one of Fannie's best creations. I loved the radio transmitter in their living room and the scenes of her sitting on her front porch each evening. What a fine, wonderful life.

Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. I'll definitely make it, maybe even today.

mmmmmmmmm, I adore caramel cake and let myself have the treat occasionally getting baby bites at Pastry Arts in Homewood. This sounds decadent. I love reading books that include recipes - recently I have just enjoyed "The Lost Recipe for Happiness."

Oh, I love this idea. With my food issues, I can't eat most of the recipes in Fannie's books, but I love them nonetheless. I will try to do one of these on my own blog!

Just seeing the title makes you want to read the book. And then the description of Neighbor Dorothy is really sweet. A caramel cake sounds perfect. Thank you so much for participating.

Sandi, I love it! Thanks for joining us again. I'm inspired to read about Neighbor Dorothy -- and that caramel cake is calling my name loudly. It looks just luscious! I hardly ever bake, but I might have to make an exception soon. ;)

Oh, man, now my cake list has gotten longer. And my cousin JUST gave me this book to read--this past Tuesday she was telling me that I must read it and handed me her copy. :)

Every time she mentioned the Caramel cake I wondered how it would taste! It just so happened that I had all the ingredients and so made it!! It is pretty darn good! A little bit of a pain for me because I had to use a make shift sifter (I need to buy one!). I loved Standing in the Rainbow and then Can't Wait to Get to Heaven! I love all of Fannie Flagg's books that I have read. Personal favorite is Daisy Fay and The Miracle Man. So funny. Everyone should make this cake! It's light and tasty!
