THE orange rolls

Any one from the Birmingham area knows of The Club... It is pronounced THE club, as opposed to thae CLUB. The Club has the best view in the city, as well as some fabulous restaurants. We have enjoyed several evenings there with our good friends.

The Club was built on the side of Red Mountain in 1951, and has recently been renovated in the art deco style. It was and is an exclusive member's only club, with the feel of Birmingham 'old money'. (This picture is compliments of Virginia from Birmingham Daily Photos ~ Stop by for a visit.)
The sun sets are amazing from the top of the mountain. That is not the only amazing thing at THE club... the orange rolls are my favorite!
I got this recipe a while back from the Birmingham News
THE Orange Rolls
1 pkg yeast
1/3 cup warm water
1/3 cup butter, melted
1 cup sour cream
1/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp salt
3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
2 Tbs butter, melted
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup flaked coconut
2 tsp grated orange rind
Glaze
1 cup confectioners sugar
1 Tbs grated orange rind
1 Tbs orange juice
preheat oven to 250°
In a large bowl dissolve the yeast in warm water. Add the next 5 ingredients, mixing well. Add enough flour to make a soft dough. Place the dough in a greased bowl and set aside to allow to rise to double size. Combine sugar, coconut, and zest, set aside.
Divide dough in half. Kneed until smooth. Roll each half out to about 1/2 inch thick, brush with melted butter. sprinkle with coconut mixture. roll into a log. cut into 1 inch pieces and place in greased muffin tins. Cover and allow to rise again.
Bake in a preheated oven for 15-20 minutes- they don't need to brown. While the are still warm drizzle with glaze.

I did cut back on the coconut, and didn't bake them in the muffin tins... but other than that they were great! Still not quite as good as the original. It must be the fabulous view that was missing.

Y'all enjoy!
