Earth Day

Today is Earth Day.

The first Earth Day was in 1970~ I find this to be amazing! Mostly, because I remember 1970... and I don't remember being overly concerned about the environment. We have come a long way from the days of AquaNet aerosol hair spray, cheap leaded gas, and the earth shoe.

I recently have started carrying my own reusable shopping bags. Those plastic grocery bags seem to multiply in my kitchen... I imagine they grow like kudzu in the landfills. This is one small thing that can make a difference.
This is a concept that has not quite arrived in the aisles of the Piggley Wiggley. When they ask paper or plastic... I pull out my bags. They aren't quite sure what to think of me.
Have y'all checked out Simply Green? It is a blog that always has great eco-friendly tips. I am always learning something new. Kat has posted the funniest cartoon! I drive a bug, Bill drives diesel... that is soooo US.
Act Locally~ Think Globally.

We throw our earth friendly bags in the car after unloading them. In fact we have them in both vehicles. One economical earth friendly little car (mine) and one big ol' Silverado, (J's). Since his retirement we've been tossing around the idea of getting rid of the truck and buying an even smaller car..perhaps a hybrid.

I remember the first Earth Day. I also remember doing things back then to conserve. We recycle and do other things to help, hopefully!

I haven't bought me any of those bags yet, but I plan to. I think if we all did it, what a difference we could make. When you just think about the plastic grocery bags and the disposable diapers, it blows the mind.

Hugs!

I talked with the children I teach in Sunday School, This past Sunday about earth day and the importance of it. We then took a walk around church and took a look at our beautiful earth...Mary

At last, I'm back to browsing...

I do remember being more conscious of the vegan/vegetarian movement in the 70's. I never gave up meat, but I enjoy eating at these restaurants. And, I have the humongous Mollie Katzen book: Moosewood...

I have also been buying the reusable bags—although I often forget to bring them in to the store. I blame this on mental-pause.

Early on, I remember reading many, many books about Native American's and being intrigued with the way they respected the earth: most tribes leaving their campsites as if they had never been there.

You are right... We have come a long way.

Thanks for sharing!

I remember 1970. I was 13. But by 17 I'd had one child. The earth was just what I walked on back then in my little fabric shoes (fad of the moment). I don't know if I could have named the vice president that particular trying year of my life. The earth now is far dearer. And we should be teaching that to our grandchildren as we teach them "thank you" and "yes, ma'am."

I carried my re-usable bags into the Pig... and the cashier said 'You are the 2nd person today'.
It's a trend!

Happy (late) Earth Day back at ya, kid! It was also our wedding anniversary *blush*. I forgot about earth shoes! I loved mine! I use the new grocery sacks too, when I remember them (like Mary). LOL

Couple days late commenting on Earth Day. Did you know that much of the hoopla surrounding Earth Days back in the early 70's when they were just becoming popular focused on the fact that we were headed for another Ice Age? And here we are, 30+ years later in the midst of Global Warming.
