Are you out of date?

When was the last time you checked your spices? If you are at all like me... during the holidays I do more baking than I do any other time of the year.

I hope you didn't find the things that I did...

Baking powder that expired in April 1993

McCormick spices says that any spices, other than black pepper, in the rectangular tin are out of date. Like these?
I am not sure, but Durkee mustard for 41 cents is probably older than my frying pan.
When you're in the food product business there are a lot of these bags tucked away... Mystery spice blend!

Maybe it's time to start fresh?

I know mine are up to date only because we moved in June, and I bought all new ones. You cracked me up with 1993 one. Hey, it could be worth something after all this time, you know. ;)

Oh yeah - we had some of those too. I recently got rid of them all!

And baking powder really does go bad. I don't think even I can out do 1993! Thanks amazing Sandi.

Hi Sandi,
This post made me laugh. I cleaned out my spice rack about two weeks ago.

I tossed more than half. The oldest one was 20 years old!! I know because it had a "Fisher Big Wheel" sticker and that store closed twenty years ago.

Time sure does fly, doesn't it?

1993! Oh my!
I used to pack mine up with each move and then my mom gave me all of hers when they moved to Japan and I just got rid of them before moving back to the states (2005) most expired in the 1980's ~ don't know why I hauled them around for so long and wow did they ever stink.
Hoep you had a wonderful Christmas. Have a great weekend and Blessed New Year!

Blessings,
Sandy ;)

I have three cans of McCormicks in that yellow tin...one of them is mustard (I wonder if it's turned into mustard gas yet?) the other two are both cinnamon. Hmm...must have been planning on doing some baking, huh? Thanks for the reminder, hon...opps...the expiration date on the mustard is 1982! Maybe I can sell it on E-Bay as an antique!

Hi Sandi!
I hear ya...while we were baking my daughter found a spice bought at Kroger in Atlanta. We've lived in FL for 22+ years. When do they become collectors items?

LOL. I know I have alot out of date.....but I keep on using them :-)

This made me laugh, too. I keep a Sharpie handy now to write the date that I bought the new spice on the jar/can. I have to go through my mom's cans and jars because she is terrible about using old spices.

I have this problem big time. My mother-in-law cleans out her cupboards and dumps it all one me. Does anyone out there want pudding mix that expired in the 70's?

Check with collectors for that Durkee's can...it might be valuable. I hear you on trying to keep up with out of date spices...I try, but know that I have a bunch that should just be tossed out. Maybe in 2008?!

Happy New Year Sandi!
